GE.26-02063 (E) 260226 270226 Committee against Torture Decision adopted by the Committee under article 22 of the Convention, concerning communication No. 1030/2020*, ** Communication submitted by: L.J., A.J., B.J., C.J. and D.J. (represented by counsel, John Sweeney) Alleged victims: The complainants State Party: Australia Date of complaint: 14 October 2020 (initial submission) Substantive issues: Extradition to Sri Lanka; risk of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment 1. The communication was submitted by L.J. on behalf of himself and his family, who are all nationals of Sri Lanka. Their applications for asylum were denied by the State Party and they were facing deportation to Sri Lanka. They claimed that, by extraditing them to Sri Lanka, the State Party would violate their rights under article 3 of the Convention. 2. On 16 October 2020, the communication was registered and the request for interim measures was granted. The State Party was requested to refrain from removing the complainants to Sri Lanka while the communication was pending before the Committee. 3. On 25 August 2025, the complainants informed the Committee that they had been granted permanent residence visas and were therefore requesting that the Committee discontinue the communication. 4. At a meeting on 14 November 2025, the Committee, in view of the fact that the complainants were no longer at risk of deportation and that they had requested the discontinuance of the communication, decided to discontinue its consideration of communication No. 1030/2020.
